Considering Composite or Porcelain Veneers?

At The White Bite, we offer our patients a range of cosmetic treatments including composite and porcelain veneers

Veneers are a great way to instantly improve the aesthetics of teeth that are discoloured, chipped, worn, crooked, poorly positioned or too widely spaced. Veneers have been used for many years in cosmetic dental treatments and are a simple and effective way to deal with problematic teeth.

How Do Veneers Work?

By covering the outside of your teeth, veneers can improve the visible aesthetics of your smile. They are durable, long-lasting and are widely used by those who desire the confidence of a beautiful smile.

Both porcelain and composite veneers normally take around two appointments to complete.

  • Composite veneers are applied in thin layers until the desired look and colour is achieved.
  • Porcelain veneers are created in a lab after a detailed mould is taken of your teeth. This way, the veneers match your smile perfectly when they are bonded to the teeth.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

The advantage of porcelain veneers is they are very durable. As a result, they keep their integrity anywhere from 7 years right up to 15 years. Composite resin veneers, on the other hand, have a lifespan of around 3-5 years; they are less durable and more prone to the effects of discolouration.

Veneers need to be treated with the care, as you would show any normal tooth and by practising good oral hygiene, you can extend the lifespan of your veneers by many years.

It is important to note, however, that anything that can break a natural tooth, can also break porcelain veneers.

Differences Between Composite Resin Veneers and Porcelain Veneers

Since composite veneers are made of resin, you may need to replace them more often than their porcelain counterparts. They are also more porous than porcelain veneers or natural teeth which means they require regular, thorough polishing to maintain their appearance.

Porcelain veneers, much as the name suggests, are made from porcelain and when porcelain is glazed it lacks porosity, which means they don’t stain as easily. Many dentists say porcelain is like ‘Fine China’ and composite resin is closer to ‘Tupperware’. This is also an indicator of the difference in cost. If you are looking for a smile that you can wear with pride for many years to come, then think of porcelain veneers as an investment rather than a purchase.
